ABOUT ME

I graduated in Physics from Oxford University, and subsequently had a successful career in IT, including various management roles in London. I then trained to be a science teacher (PGCE) and worked at Sir John Lawes school in Harpenden. I have taught Physics, Chemistry and Biology up to GCSE, and Physics at A level. I am fully DBS checked.

I now work as a private tutor, teaching GCSE Science and A level Physics. I am experienced in teaching AQA, Edexcel, OCR A, OCR B and CIE at A level, and several different exam boards at GCSE. As well as teaching the course contents, I help students with exam technique, and improve their maths and writing skills to the required level for their exams.

LESSONS

Whether teaching online or face-to-face, my approach is similar.

I tailor lessons to the needs of the students, who range from those who struggle with the subject to those who are already quite strong but are aiming for an A* or 9. We agree the general approach up front, and I discuss the topics to be covered with the students, week by week. I give regular feedback to parents regarding students’ progress.

My aim is to prepare students to perform to the best of their ability in the exams, whilst also inspiring their interest in the subject. My teaching focuses on explaining the key concepts, so that students really understand them, and on developing exam techniques. Students learn to apply their knowledge by answering the questions I set them. I then give detailed feedback. I identify their learning needs and give personalised teaching. I encourage students to ask questions.

I send worksheets to the student prior to the tutorial. Depending on the wishes of parents and students, I may set homework; students should send me their written answers before the next tutorial, and then we review them together.

Many students find Science, especially Physics, quite challenging, and I have found that one-to-one tutoring enables students to make rapid progress by meeting their individual needs.
